Building Capacity, Expanding Horizons: Capacity Building in Higher Education implementation at Walailak University

What does it take for a university to thrive in a fast-changing, globalised world? Beyond classrooms and textbooks, the answer lies in capacity building—the continuous strengthening of people, systems, and partnerships that drive academic excellence. This is where Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) , a key action under the Erasmus+ Programme, plays a transformative role.
CBHE is designed to support higher education institutions through international cooperation projects. By bringing together universities and organisations from different countries, CBHE helps modernise curricula, enhance teaching and learning, improve governance, strengthen research and digital skills, and ensure graduates are ready for the future workforce. In short, CBHE turns collaboration into lasting institutional growth.
Applying for a CBHE grant begins with building a strong international consortium and submitting a project proposal through the EU Funding & Tenders Portal, following the annual Erasmus+ call for proposals. Projects are evaluated based on relevance, impact, sustainability, and the strength of partnerships. While calls are launched yearly, the main application deadline typically falls early in the year, giving institutions time to prepare ambitious and meaningful projects.
The benefits of CBHE funding are far-reaching. Universities gain access to international expertise, staff development opportunities, innovative teaching practices, and stronger links with industry and global partners. Faculty members enhance their professional and research capacity, while students benefit from improved programmes, global perspectives, and stronger employability outcomes.
Walailak University proudly celebrates a major milestone in this journey: the School of Accountancy and Finance has successfully received a CBHE grant. This achievement reflects the school’s strong academic vision and commitment to international standards, and it marks an important step toward advancing excellence in accounting and finance education at WU.
“When universities invest in capacity building, they invest in people—and when people grow, institutions rise, borders fade, and futures are reimagined.”
