Living Sustainably: Tips for Beginners

By Settaboot Onphakdee, Division of Corporate Communication

Living sustainably isn’t just a trend—it’s a lifestyle that anyone can adopt to make a positive impact on the world. We’ve all seen the news about how climate change and global warming are affecting our planet, from irregular storms and rising sea levels to threats to wildlife. Here are some simple tips I’d like to share to help you start living more sustainably:

Adopt a Sustainable Mindset

You might have heard the saying, “Victory begins in the mind,” and I believe it’s spot on. When starting your journey toward sustainability, there’s no need to be too hard on yourself. Embrace a relaxed mindset and stay committed to making positive changes for both yourself and the planet. Start with small, manageable steps, and be open to adapting and evolving over time.

Embrace the 3 Rs – Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle

Begin by reducing waste: buy only what you truly need. Reuse items that are still in good condition and can serve your needs. Recycle materials properly. Simple changes, like using reusable bags and bringing your own containers to shops, can significantly lower your environmental footprint.

Adopt easy habits to cut down on energy and water use, such as turning off lights and unplugging appliances when they’re not in use. Switch to energy-efficient bulbs and choose water-saving fixtures. These small adjustments not only conserve resources but can also help lower your utility bills.

Since we need to buy products anyway, why not support businesses that prioritize sustainability? Look for eco-friendly certifications, choose organic and locally sourced products, and avoid single-use plastics. By making thoughtful purchasing decisions, you help promote a more sustainable economy and reduce environmental impact.

Whenever possible, opt for eco-friendly transportation options like walking, cycling, carpooling, or taking public transportation. These choices help reduce air pollution and lower your carbon footprint. Plus, walking or cycling supports a healthier lifestyle!
