Participating in the 48th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee was one of the most memorable and meaningful experiences of my academic and professional life. With the generous support of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, I had the honour of attending the meeting as a member of the working group that had contributed to advancing the nomination of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The most unforgettable moment was when the Chairperson brought down the gavel and officially announced the inscription of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan as a World Heritage Site. At that very moment, years of dedication, collaboration, research, documentation, consultation, and collective commitment became a historic achievement. The sound of the gavel represented not only international recognition of an important cultural heritage site but also immense pride for the people of Nakhon Si Thammarat and Thailand.
Being present at the meeting also allowed me to understand more deeply how decisions concerning cultural and natural heritage are discussed at the international level. The session brought together representatives, experts, advisory bodies, and scholars from around the world. Each discussion demonstrated the complexity of heritage conservation, which requires a careful balance between authenticity, community participation, sustainable development, tourism management, and the transmission of cultural values to future generations.
For academics in the humanities and social sciences, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee provides an exceptionally valuable learning platform. It reveals how historical research, language, culture, anthropology, archaeology, architecture, public policy, and community engagement can be integrated to create meaningful impacts beyond academia.
This experience reaffirmed my belief that humanities and social sciences play a crucial role in safeguarding cultural heritage. More importantly, the inscription is not the end of the journey. It marks the beginning of our shared responsibility to protect this sacred living heritage and ensure that its values continue to inspire generations to come.
