Climate change and air pollution are major challenges affecting human health, quality of life, and the environment. Young people, in particular, will play an essential role in shaping and driving society in the future. In response, Walailak University has launched the “Youth Driving Clean Air Towards a Sustainable Future” project to promote learning about climate change and air pollution among secondary school students and nearby communities through experiential, hands-on activities.
Through the project, students will learn about the causes and impacts of climate change, approaches to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through mitigation, and strategies for adapting to climate-related impacts. These learning activities will be complemented by demonstrations of air quality monitoring equipment, including particulate matter monitors, personal air sampling pumps, and airborne microorganism samplers. This practical experience will help students understand the principles and importance of monitoring air quality in their own surroundings.
Another key activity is the “Clean Air Starts With Us” campaign, which encourages students to make personal commitments to protecting air quality. Examples include avoiding open waste burning, reducing the use of private vehicles for short-distance travel, and wearing protective masks when PM2.5 levels are high. These commitments will be shared through a Wall of Pledges, helping inspire broader awareness and positive change within schools and communities.
The project reflects the university’s role in transferring environmental health knowledge to society while integrating teaching with academic and community services. University students will participate as assistant facilitators, sharing knowledge with local youth and helping build a sustainable environmental education network.
The project also supports SDG 13: Climate Action by strengthening knowledge, awareness, and youth participation in addressing climate change. Empowering young people with both understanding and practical experience provides an important foundation for a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future.
